Here are a selection of two from each three-color combination. Three colors is about the limit of what 2DH mana bases can handle efficiently, and there are even less choices in each color combination once you’re talking about three-color commanders, but some of the most unique and powerful commanders in the format are in this category. Top 5 GB (“Golgari”) Commanders Top 5 GR (“Gruul”) Commanders There aren’t a ton of choices in each two-color combination, but here are five of the strongest and most-played commanders in each two-color “guild.” Top 5 UW (“Azorius”) Commanders Having access to a second color opens up the card pool dramatically, and often lets you build more powerful decks. While each of them have mechanics you can build a whole deck around, plenty of them are also just solid “value” commanders who are reasonably costed, give you access to colors you need, and let you take your deck in the direction you want, instead of building super tightly to a single card or theme. The “partner” commanders are popular for their flexibility (you can make your own color combination!) and their broad utility. Top 10 Blue Commanders Top 10 Black Commanders Top 10 Red Commanders They’re a great place for beginning deckbuilders to start, and an opportunity for veteran deckbuilders to flex their knowledge of unusual or underplayed cards in a specific color.

Monocolored commander decks come with both a unique set of challenges (more limited card pool) and advantages (faster and more consistent mana than other 2DH decks). In service of that, here are a selection of 10 of the most popular and powerful commanders in each color. The goal of this page is to inspire both new players and veterans of the format to try builds, color combinations, or ideas they haven’t tried before, and especially to give existing Commander players who are new to 2DH’s more limited card pool an idea of the possibilities that exist within the format.
